Attacking in the shallow end of the Santa Paula pool, Carpinteria score eight goals in 14-3 Citrus Coast League girls water polo game on Monday.
“Most scoring is done when facing the goalie who is on the deep side because the goalie can jump off the shallow bottom to block shots,” Carpinteria coach Jon Otsuki explained. “But the Warriors read the script backwards as they scored 8 of their 14 goals going towards the shallow end.”
League-champion Carpinteria needed a big second quarter after leading 2-0 at the end of the first. Junior Lilli Nemetz scored off a pass from Taylor Classen and sophomore Giulia Piccoletti earned a 5-meter penalty shot ,which was converted by Francis Bennett.
Carpinteria continued the assault, scoring on next its four possessions as the lead grew to 8-0 by the end of the half.
Nemetz scored four goals in the second half as she continued to beat her defender on drives to open water to attack the goal. She finished with six goals.
“Nemetz had a great game on both sides of the pool today,” said Otsuki.
Piccoletti added five goals and Classen had two.
Goalie Erin Otsuki recorded 14 blocks and added 2 assists for the day.
The Warriors (15-6, 7-0) wrap up their regular season Thursday as they host Hueneme for senior recognition day at 3:30.
