Providence celebrated competing in its first athletic event in its new gym, but Fillmore played the spoiler and beat the Patriots, 25-14, 26-24, 18-25, 25-11 in the non-league girls volleyball match on Wednesday.
The Patriots moved into the former Girls Inc. facility on Ortega Street on Santa Barbara’s Eastside this summer.
“It was loud and fun,” said Athletic Director Dan Terry of the atmosphere in the home gym.
Ava Wagner and Kate Douglas each had five kills to lead the Providence attack. Wagner added four service aces and two blocks, Daniella Terry also had four aces and Douglas served three aces.
“The team did great considering I taught them a lot of new skills,” said coach Taylor Slover. “This game got us the experience we desperately needed.”
Girls Golf
Victoria Chen shot a 43 to earn medalist honors and Sagarika Manion finished a stroke back, but it wasn’t enough for the Dos Pueblos girls golf team, which fell to host Lompoc, 286-292, on Wednesday at La Purisima Golf Course.
Halee Sager shot a 45 to lead Lompoc.
“We have a lot of girls that are brand new to match play like Charis (Dreesman) and Sonia (Melkonian) and today was a true test of their patience and persistence,” said DP coach Dan Choi. “I was really proud of how all the girls never gave up and kept on persisting.
“The girls are doing all the right things and, at this stage of the year, that makes me tremendously optimistic for our continued improvement as a team.”
Dos Pueblos is 0-2.
