Dos Pueblos softball exploded for a whopping 23 runs in what ended as a suspended game against Buena on Tuesday in Ventura.

The Chargers held a 23-17 lead with two outs in the fifth inning before the game was called due to darkness. If the game were to have gone five innings, it would have counted as a completed game.

The two sides will likely have to replay the entire game at a later date, according to Dos Pueblos head coach Mike Gerken.

“I am proud of our offensive output, but it is disappointing not to get a victory as a result,” Gerken said.

The two sides combined for 40 total runs and 31 hits, including an 18-run first inning where the Chargers plated 10 and the Bulldogs scored eight.

Anastasia Brunner had a monster day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with six RBI. Meanwhile, both Kacey Hurley and Vereniki Maniadi went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Dos Pueblos and Buena will square off once again on Friday.

Rio Mesa 5, San Marcos 0

The Royals were shutout in their league-opening loss to the Spartans on Tuesday in Oxnard.

“We gained valuable experience in our league opener,” San Marcos head coach Emily Dietz said. “With a young and developing squad, this game was an opportunity to see the level of competition we’ll be facing and the areas we need to fine-tune.”

San Marcos struggled to get anything going on the offensive end with just one hit courtesy of Solana Sandoval.

“Rio Mesa’s pitcher, Analia Lopez, is the most talented pitcher we’ve seen thus far,” Dietz said. “She kept our hitters off balance throughout the game. We’ll take this as a learning experience and continue working on adjustments at the plate.”

Despite the loss, the Royals held Rio Mesa to just four hits. However, they issued nine free passes and the Spartans took advantage. Defensively, Reese Large provided a highlight-reel diving double play.

San Marcos will look to bounce back at home against Rio Mesa on Friday at 3 p.m.

“We’re taking this game as a stepping stone, and with a clear focus on improvement,” Dietz said. “I’m looking forward to the league matchup at home on Friday.”

Ventura 11, Santa Barbara 0

The Dons dropped their Channel League opener to the Cougars on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.

It was a close game early thanks to a solid start from Vienna Mochi, as Ventura led just 2-0 after the first four innings.

However, the Cougars poured on nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the win.

Victoria Arellano recorded the Dons’ lone hit of the game. Santa Barbara will be on the road against Ventura on Friday.
