Santa Barbara High track & field swept the three-team meet against Buena and Rio Mesa on Wednesday.
On the girls side, the Dons defeated the Bulldogs 82-40 and pulled out an 82-44 win over the Spartans. Meanwhile, the boys beat Rio Mesa 76-46 and earned a 63-59 win against Buena.
“It was a great team effort today with every kid and event group doing their part,” Santa Barbara coach Olivia Perdices said.
Girls
Elina Stump had a big day for the Dons, registering a first-place finish in the 100 meter, the long jump and the triple jump to finish as the lone triple winner.
Meanwhile, Jasmyn Amirfazlian Dennis finished as a double winner with victories in the high jump and as a part of the 4×400 relay.
Other members of the first-place relay team were Addie Hoke, London Moro and Mackenna show.
“The girls keep putting more and more pieces into place,” Perdices said. “They did a great job showing up and competing wherever we asked today.”
Boys
Malachi Johnston was the lone individual double winner for the Dons’ boys after finishing first in the shot put (46-4.5) and the discus (131-9.5). He led a sweep of the discus with Emmanuel Malpica and Joseph Lechuga.
“Our throwers come every day to put in work and it’s bringing them some nice results,” Perdices said.
Santa Barbara swept the 1,600-meter race, with Bode Andrulaitis’ personal best time of 4:26.84 leading the way. Andreas Dybdahl, Blaise Snow and Nico Tossos followed Andrulaitis.
Magne Henriques came out on top in the 400-meter race and ran a leg of the 4×400 first-place team with Snow, Dybdahl and Winston Bartley.
“The distance boys did exactly what we asked them for today,” Perdices said. “The 4×4 is new territory for Winston and he got us out to a lead we never looked back from.”
The Dons will compete in the Southern California Frosh Soph Championships in Simi Valley on Saturday.
Carpinteria vs. Channel Islands
The Warriors split their meet with Channel Islands on Wednesday, with the girls winning 84-41 and the boys falling by a score of 9036.
Girls
Melani Avalos and Averi Alexander were the lone double winners for the Carpinteria girls, with Avalos winning the discus (103-6) and the shot put (31-3) and Alexander earning wins in the long jump (16-4.24) and the triple jump (33-10.5).
“Melanie is improving her technique every week. She is setting herself up for some big throws in the last few weeks of the season,” Warriors coach Van Latham said. “Averi was one-quarter inch from her PR in the long jump and six inches off her PR in the triple jump. She also ran a strong relay leg.”
Carpinteria had three other girls set personal records, with Mike Mullikin running the 300 hurdles in 50.74 seconds, Giarys Gomez winning the 400 meter at 65.48 seconds and Kiana Kiah coming out on top in the 1,600 meter with a time of 5:55.06.
Boys
Wes Chung was the lone double winner for the Warrior boys, earning victories in the 110 high hurdles (17.96) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.86).
David Esquivel won the 400 with a personal-best time of 55.97 seconds and Yohann Garcia also set a personal record of 40-5 in his shot put win.
“David has made tremendous improvement this season. He has dropped his PR by 5 seconds since his first meet of his career in February,” Latham said. “Yohann made a big jump today. He improved his PR by four feet in the shot put. This is on top of a one-and-a-half PR last week.”
Carpinteria will host the 104th Russell Cup, which will contain 50 total schools, on Saturday.
San Marcos vs. Ventura & Pacifica
The Royals took down Pacifica on both the boys and girls sides but both squads lost to Ventura on Wednesday.
“Today was a great showing for the Royals,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “We competed with confidence and it showed with all our performance today.”
Girls
Ava Carter was a double individual winner for the Royals with wins in the 100 meter and the 200 meter.
Carter was then joined by Kiala Haas, Lucia Wolf and Sophia Rollman to take home first place in the 4×400 relay.
Avery Leck also came away with a pair of individual wins in the 100 hurdle and the triple jump. She also finished second in the high jump.
Meanwhile, Ellie Monson ran two personal best times in the 800 meter and the 1,600 meter races. Haas finished second in the 800 meter.
Boys
Ben Callanan registered a pair of personal best times in the 800 meter and the 1,600 meter, despite normally running the 3,200 meter.
In the shot put, Kyle Rivas and Jeremy Strand captured second and third place, respectively.
“This was huge for our boys to score against Ventura in the throws,” Hantgin said.
Tommy Fealy walked away with second-place finishes in both the long jump and high jump while TJ Deakyne won the high jump with a personal best of 6-0. Brody Green finished just behind Deakyne at 5-10 for second.
“Multi-sport athletes have really changed our program for the better,” Hantgin said. “They bring so much athleticism and hard work to the team.”
