San Marcos wrestling had four of its five wrestlers place at the Crespi Clash this weekend at Crespi High.

“This tournament was a first and ended up being great competition,” San Marcos coach Eric Flores said. “Our wrestlers have been practicing all throughout our three-week break and it showed today.

“Our team captains continue to find themselves on the podium, which continues to prepare them for league.”

Anthony Leal led the charge for the Royals in the 134-pound weight class, going 3-1 and taking third place overall in his division.

Leal fell in the semifinals to drop to the consolation bracket, where he secured a technical fall win and came out on top in the third-place matchup due to an injury default.

Cole Dominguez followed with a fourth-place finish at 3-2 in the 152-pound class. After dropping his first match, Dominguez won three straight matches to take home fourth place.

Leon Fox and Roman Jungblut turned in fifth-place performances in the 177 and 128-pound weight class, respectively. Fox went 2-2 on the weekend while Jungblut went 4-2.

Dos Pueblos Girls @ Western Lady Pioneer Challenge

The Chargers accumulated 17 team points at the 31-team Western Lady Pioneer Challenge over the weekend. Tournament champion Santa Ana High ended with 170.5 points.

“I’m very happy with the progress these girls are making,” Dos Pueblos coach Matthew Bernard said. “They have come a long way in a short amount of time and continue to build and grow.

“They are hungry and they want to take it to their competition – yesterday’s progress and results will undoubtedly motivate them for weeks to come.”

Lesly De La Rosa was the top performer for the Chargers, scoring 11 team points and earning sixth place at 145 pounds after going 2-3 in her matchups.

“Lesly wrestled very tough and proved to be a hard-nosed wrestler these girls did not want to compete against,” Bernard said.

Ariana Valladares capped off the scoring with six team points at 110 pounds by winning by pin over Atwater High’s Violet Valero.

Yaretzi Arredondo (105), Estafany Rodriguez (125) and Rebecca Baker (125) rounded out the Dos Pueblos wrestlers.

The Chargers will be on the road for a dual meet against Rio Mesa on Thursday.
