Providence boys volleyball took fifth place in the Del Sol Varsity Invitational this weekend in Oxnard.

The Patriots went 2-3 in the two-day, eight-team tournament to move to 14-9 on the season.

“This was our second year doing this tournament and we loved it,” Providence head coach Dan Terry said. “It’s a great opportunity to get a lot of games and play in Del Sol’s beautiful new gym. It makes me excited to think about when we finish construction on our new Ortega property.

“The competition was great, it allowed our guys to push their limits a bit but still compete. With just a few tweaks, I think we can really hang with teams of this level. We blocked much better this weekend and were playing some solid defense. I’d just like to see fewer balls drop on miscommunications.”

The Patriots began the weekend with a sweep victory over Pacifica and a pair of losses against Ventura and Channel Islands.

On day two, Providence fell to Oxnard in the first round of the playoffs and finished off the weekend with a sweep of Buena.

While missing starters on Friday, Mick Falconer and Micah Song stepped up and turned in strong performances for the Patriots.

Providence will end the regular season on the road against Dunn on Tuesday.
