Providence girls volleyball went on the road and came away with a five-set win over Midland on Saturday in Los Olivos, 25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 16-25, 15-10.
“This was a really fun match,” Patriots assistant coach Dan Terry said. “Midland really played a good game and we weren’t expecting to go five, but when our feet were held to the fire the girls pushed hard and played some really great volleyball.
“Going five was a valuable experience tonight. I’m glad they were able to pull it off.”
Providence found itself up against a wall in the fifth set, trailing 9-3. However, freshman Alicia Wolfington then came through with an eight-point service run that included an impressive six aces.
Wolfington’s strong play from the service line then powered the Patriots to a 15-10 win to take the overall victory.
“I’m really proud of Alicia’s nerves of steel on the service line,” Terry said. “She didn’t just put the serves in the court, she served tough with a lot of pressure on her.”
Shirel Salomon also had a strong night from the service line with 12 kills, while Rosie Murren-Doherty led the team with eight kills. Luliana Sklar and Kylie Hulme hammered down seven kills apiece.
The Patriots will head across town to take on Laguna Blanca on Thursday.
