A shorthanded Providence girls tennis team got off to a good start and held off Downey, 10-8, in a first-round match of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs on Wednesday in Downey.

“Our team once again showed true grit,” said coach Chris Elwood. “The key to the match was our solid first round of 4-2, led by dynamite pair Jane Krautmann and Amber Regan, who went undefeated on the day, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.”

The Patriots were missing their No. 1 singles player and doubles team.

Sarah Monroy and Aza Elwood picked up the slack in singles with each posting two wins,  and the team of Jacky and Janelle Pryko notched a victory.

Providence also got a clutch win from the all-freshman doubles team of Annie Haugen and Abby Gobbell.

The Patriots will play host to Valley View in the Round of 16 on Friday at the Santa Barbara Municipal Courts.
