Carpinteria will host its fourth annual Pumpkin Smash, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Carpinteria Community Garden, 4855 5th St.
The free, family event combines fall fun with sustainability, helping reduce organic waste in landfills and cut greenhouse gas emissions, the city said.
Community members are invited to bring their jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkins, and gourds of any size to smash, squish, or drop into an organics collection bin.
The event will feature fun, pumpkin-themed activities, including pumpkin bowling and the chance to toss pumpkins at a target. Extra pumpkins will be available on site for anyone who wants to join in the fun, while supplies last.
Collected pumpkins and gourds will be donated for animal feed or composted. Participants are asked to remove all non-organic materials, including candles and decorations, before bringing their pumpkins.
Visitors can take home ready-to-use compost for their gardens. Pre-bagged compost will be available, and residents are welcome to bring larger container to take home bulk compost.
