No injuries were reported early Thursday in a residential structure fire in downtown Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 3:15 a.m. to the fire on the 600 block of Bradbury Avenue, a one-block street between Ortega and Cota streets.

Upon arrival, they found heavy fire showing from a two-story structure behind the main house, fire Battalion Chief Robert Mercado told Noozhawk.

Crews pulled hose lines and began attacking the flames while other firefighters, aided by a ladder truck, cut ventilation holes in the the roof because the fire had extended into the attic area.

It took about 30 minutes to control the fire, Mercado said.

The fire started in a breezeway outside what appeared to be a garage with an apartment above, Mercado said, and caused some heat damage to a third adjacent structure on the property.

Four people who were asleep inside the apartment were able to escape without injury, Mercado said, adding that firefighters rescued a cat, a hamster, “and possibly some fish.”

Damage to the structure was estimated at $100,000, and the cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
