Richard F. Swain

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father Richard F. Swain. He departed from this world peacefully at home on June 30, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and cherished memories.

Born on Dec. 1, 1946, Richard was the loving son of George Swain and Molly (Trevino) Swain-Thornbury.

From a young age, he displayed a genuine zest for life and a remarkable sense of responsibility, which became defining characteristics throughout his life.

He was born an Angeleno (in Los Angeles); the Swains then moved to Santa Barbara in 1963, where Richard worked at Castagnola Seafood and then Raytheon before and after being drafted into the U.S. Army.

Wed in 1970 to Catherine Budzis, Richard was a devoted husband, sharing a lifelong journey filled with love, compassion, and mutual support. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, warmth, and countless shared moments that formed the foundation of a beautiful family.

As a father, Richard was an unwavering pillar of strength and guidance for his children, Stacey, Mark and Michael. He instilled in them the values of integrity, perseverance and empathy, shaping them into the individuals they are today. His love knew no bounds, and he always prioritized the well-being and happiness of his family above all else.

Professionally, Richard was an electrical engineer for Raytheon for 44 years, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues through hard work, dedication, and a strong sense of ethics. He was a role model not only for his family but also for those he worked with, inspiring them to be better versions of themselves.

Beyond his professional commitments, Richard held a range of passions and hobbies that enriched his life. He found solace in collecting and rebuilding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, spending times with friends at Goleta Beach, and often sharing these  pursuits with family and friends, creating lasting memories that will be cherished forever.

Richard faced life’s challenges with remarkable courage and grace, setting an example for all who knew him. Even in difficult times, he maintained a positive outlook, showing strength and resilience that inspired everyone around him.

As we bid farewell to our beloved father, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind. His spirit will forever guide us, and the lessons he taught us will continue to shape our lives. Though we mourn his loss deeply, we are grateful for the time we had with him and the love he showered upon us.

He is survived by his wife Cathy; daughter Stacey Swain; sons Mark Swain and Michael Swain; five grandchildren Alina, Madison, Jorden, Carter and Cameron; sister Rita (Swain) Ortega; and many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Richard will be held 11 a.m. Oct. 7 at Santa Barbara Elks Lodge 613, 150 N. Kellogg, Santa Barbara.

We invite all those whose lives Richard touched to join us honoring the memory of a truly exceptional father, husband, grandfather, friend and colleague.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Veteran Affairs, an organization close to Richard’s heart.
