The Riviera Ridge Middle School will present the musical “Something Rotten! JR.,” a comic mash-up of 16th century Shakespeare and 21st century Broadway.
Show times are 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13; 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 in Battistone Hall, at The Riviera Ridge School.
The musical is led by Molly Markstrum, 21-year Riviera Ridge educator; music director Dauri Kennedy; choreographer Karyn Laver (owner of Dance Network); and Riviera Ridge alumna Adelia Hubbard, set artist and backstage manager.
“Through imaginative staging, dynamic musical direction, and lively choreography, the cast and crew bring all the humor, music, and larger-than-life characters of Something Rotten! JR. to the stage,” the school said.
Created by Grammy Award–winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick and screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, the 60-minute adaptation of “Something Rotten!” is tailored for young performers.
In the story: Set in the late 1500s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but find themselves stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.”
When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing, and acting all at once, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s first musical.
Amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self — and all that jazz.
Tickets to the show are $25 and are available at the door.
