Ryder Torres provided a spark for the Bishop Diego boys basketball team in a 47-41 victory Saturday at Cate in a Tri-Valley League game.

Torres scored a team-high 15 points to help bring the Cardinals back in the second half.

“Big props to Ryder Torres who came in as a spark and helped us offensively,” said Bishop coach James Coronado.

Bryan Trejo added 11 points.

“We had to stick together, and great teams stick together during the rough times. I felt we did that and it helped us pull it out,” said Coronado. “I told our guys that sometimes great teams have to win ugly. This definitely wasn’t our best game but we got the win and that’s what counts.”

Cate started strong as Jengus Ercil and Jacob Gabbay paced the Rams to a 17-13 lead in the first quarter.

Torres got Bishop going in the second quarter, and the teams went into halftime tied at 24.

“I credit Bishop Diego and head coach James Coronado for having his guys all over the boards and loose balls and creating lots of second chance opportunities and shots per possession,” said Cate coach Andy Gil.

Marcus Scudder scored 10 points to lead Cate.

“I loved our effort and heart we showed today,” said Gil. “We did a great job in the first half getting the ball out in transition and getting layups.”

He praised the defense of freshman Josh Butler on Bishop senior Qu’Ran Gossett.

Cate is 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the TVL while Bishop Diego improves to 12-6 and 2-0.
