A dozen Samarkand Retirement Community residents showed that age is just a number last week.

The adventurous seniors spent last Friday ziplining through the Santa Ynez Valley at Highline Adventures through the retirement community’s fitness program.

The day full of laughter and cheers was particularly special for resident Alex De Paoli, who was celebrating his 90th birthday by honoring his inner child.

“Turning 90 felt like the perfect time to try something bold, so I celebrated by going ziplining,” De Paoli said. “Soaring through the trees reminded me that age doesn’t define adventure — attitude does. I may be 90, but I’m still saying yes to joy, courage and a little bit of thrill.”

Samarkand wellness director Kelsey Roberts reflected on the experience as an example of the community built at Samarkand.

“It’s incredible to offer opportunities like this — moments that spark vibrancy, courage, and connection,” Roberts said. “Watching residents challenge themselves, support one another, and truly live life to the fullest is exactly what our community is all about.”

While ziplining may not be an everyday activity for senior community members, those at Samarkand proved last week that the thrilling aspects of life do not have age limits.

“It was exhilarating, terrifying and a lot of fun. I would definitely do it again,” Samarkand resident Wes Haystead said.
