San Marcos announced the hiring of Dave Goss as the school’s new head boys volleyball coach on Thursday. Goss is a member of the San Marcos High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

“I could not be happier to be returning to my alma mater and taking the reins of the proud and storied San Marcos boys program,” Goss said.

After his stellar four years with the Royals, Goss continued his play at Stanford, where he was a two-time First Team All-American and a two-time NCAA Runner-up.

His strong volleyball career continued into the professional ranks when he played with the US National Team and in a professional league in Brazil.

After his playing days, Goss turned to coaching junior high, high school and club volleyball throughout California.

Last year, he spent the majority of his time coaching the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club 18U team and serving as an assistant coach for the Dos Pueblos boys volleyball team.

“I am extremely excited to welcome Coach Goss back to San Marcos,” San Marcos principal Dare Holdren said. “He is a legend in the San Marcos volleyball community and his athletic feats are surpassed only by the content of his character.

“I look forward to the continued success of our program and even more so to the positive influence that Dave will have on our student-athletes.”

Goss is taking over for longtime head coach Roger Kuntz, who retired after last spring’s season where the Royals went 33-4 and won a Channel League championship.

“It is always amazing when someone comes home, it is going to be fun to watch Coach Goss lead the team in the same gym he played in,” San Marcos athletic director Aaron Solis said.

“Coach Goss is the perfect person to continue the successful work Coach Kuntz has done over the past years. It has been a joy to work with him and I look forward to many years of success.”
