San Marcos boys golf rounded out its season with a 10th-place finish at the SCGA Qualifier and CIF-SS Individual Championship on Thursday at Los Robles Golf Club in Oxnard, a par 70 course.
The Royals combined for a team score of 385 amidst the 14-team field in which four teams move on to the CIF-SCGA Finals.
Austin Downing ended his year on a high note, shooting an impressive four-under-par 66 to finish in a tie for first place in a field of 130 golfers.
“Unfortunately, because of the way that the event works – because [Downing] missed advancing out of Los Robles individually, he was not eligible for the championship. With that being said, it was still a great round of golf to cap off a really strong finish to the season for him,” San Marcos head coach Jeff Ashton said.
Downing was joined by fellow Royals Axl Wedhammar (74), Andy Keenan (79), Adam Kabaretti (82) and Nate Duva (84).
“We didn’t have our best day today and got off to a bumpy start,” Ashton said. “The guys did a great job of battling through and keeping their spirits high and never giving up.
“We all wish we had played better today, but that’s golf. The boys had a tremendous season and we only graduate one player from our top six. They are all excited to compete again next year.”
