San Marcos boys golf captured first place to lead local teams at the 20-team Coyote Invitational on Monday at Calabasas Country Club, a par-72 course.
The Royals’ four-person team combined for a team score of 309 to beat out second-place Agoura at 316. Meanwhile, Dos Pueblos placed ninth as a team with its score of 334 and Santa Barbara came in 15th with a mark of 348.
The Calabasas Country Club proved to be a tough course, as just two of the 100 golfers competing broke par.
San Marcos
Austin Downing turned in his best round of the season to lead the Royals, shooting a one-over par 73 to finish the day tied for third place individually.
Downing was followed by teammates Axl Wedhammar (78), Andy Keenan (79) and Nate Duva (79).
San Marcos will now turn its attention to a match against Oxnard at River Ridge on Wednesday.
Dos Pueblos
The Chargers were led by a top-10 showing from Colt Roberts, who shot a 77 on the day.
The rest of the Dos Pueblos golfers accounting for the team score were Orlando Ramirez (83), Connor Nightingale (86) and Coulter Jay (88).
“I was proud of the way my team took on the course with a lot of them playing the course for the first time,” Dos Pueblos head coach Kevin Ahlers said. “I was also proud of the way my team kept their composure despite the tricky pin positions.”
The Chargers will take on Westlake for a non-league match on Thursday at Sterling Hills.
Santa Barbara High
Alex Ortega turned in a solid round for the Dons, finishing with a score of 78 to record a 13th-place individual showing.
Ortega was joined by Jack Alzina (86), Logan Gankas (91) and Dimitri Tar (93) in the team’s 15th-place finish.
Santa Barbara High will open Channel League play against Buena on Tuesday at Olivas Links.
