San Marcos boys volleyball went 2-1 and fell in the semifinals of the Redondo Union Tournament on Saturday.
The Royals won all three of their games on Friday to earn a spot in the Gold Bracket Playoffs, where they began play against Burroughs.
Matteo Burdick and Cliff Flicker led the San Marcos attack in a 25-22, 25-19 victory over Burroughs to kick off the day.
“Matteo was solid in the tournament and showed a great deal of talent and maturity in his first varsity tournament,” Royals coach Roger Kuntz said. “He was unshakable in service-receive, solid from the serving line and a big part of our offense. Cliff also played great defense and took over our service reception.”
In the quarterfinal matchup against Servite, Mason Rice and Cameron Earls took over for San Marcos and powered them to a 25-23, 25-15 win. Both Rice and Earls were named to the All-Tournament Team for their strong play.
“Mason showed why he is capable of playing at the elite level… Cameron provided offense as a hitter and setter. This was a high-level match,” Kuntz said.
The win sent them to the semifinals against top-seeded Mira Costa, where Mira Costa came out on top to give the Royals their first loss of the year.
San Marcos (6-1) will be on the road against Newbury Park on Tuesday.
