The San Marcos and Dos Pueblos cross country teams competed in the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Saturday in Walnut.
The Royals and Chargers each competed in the Division 1-2 Sweepstakes race in the two-day invitational that draws in competition from across the state.
San Marcos
The Royals’ boys claimed 15th place overall in the Division 1-2 Sweepstakes race, thanks in part to a historic performance by August Singer.
Singer ran a personal best and San Marcos program record time of 14:30 to take 12th place individually.
“August is running with a lot of confidence and has welcomed the challenge of racing some of the best runners in California,” San Marcos head coach Marilyn Hantgin said.
The Royals also got strong showings from Everett Young (14:58), Brogan Hemphill (15:30), Audric Halberg (15:34) and Drew Vogel (15:48).
“Everett is just a sophomore but runs like a veteran. Running in this race gives us a preview of later championship races at the end of the season,” Hantgin said.
Dos Pueblos
The Charger boys came in 14th place overall in Division 1-2 Sweepstakes with 301 total points.
Ian McMurtry was the racer for Dos Pueblos, earning 24th place at 15:03.3. He was followed by Quentin Holland (15:34.4), Dylan Adam (15:43.4), Evan Vuong (15:56.3), Ricky Lopez Garza (16:10), James Domingues (16:22.2) and Jadyn Peterson (16:33.1).
Meanwhile, the girls team had four finishers and did not record a team score.
The Charger girls finishers were Gwen Shea (33rd, 19:12), Mitzi Myers (37th, 19:30.7), Abby Chou (41st, 19:37.8) and Viola Penn (67th, 21:10.8.
“This year’s meet used Mt. SAC’s rain course following heavy downpours during the week leading up to the race,” Dos Pueblos head coach David Jackson said. “We appreciate the organizers’ work to prepare the alternate course and keep the competition moving forward. Everyone was safe and so many of our Chargers set personal bests.
“It was special for our team to see our neighbors at San Marcos doing so well. Some of each squad posed with each other after the races were over.”
