San Marcos ran into a hot Ventura team and dropped a 53-40 decision in a Channel League girls basketball team on Thursday.

The Royals were coming off a big win over league co-leader Oxnard.

“Tonight wasn’t our night on either side of the floor,” said San Marcos coach Tiffany Simms.

Michelle Arellanes scored 20 points to lead the Royals and Ellie Monson had nine.

Ventura (6-3, 14-8) had a balanced scoring attack led by Josie Sebek with 13 points and Emily Rea with 12. The next three players had nine, eight and seven points.

“It was a tough loss but a good learning experience. This game will force us to get back to how we play our game, as a team,” said Simms.

The Royals (5-3 in league, 10-7 overall) play at Dos Pueblos on Saturday at 4 p.m.
