San Marcos jumped out to a 10-4 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat Santa Barbara High, 47-39, in a crosstown Channel League girls basketball game on Thursday at the Thunderhut.
Mia Martinez-Tomatis led three Royals in double figures with 13 points, Riley Welch scored 11 points and Mariia Shytkova had 10.
“A great overall game on both sides of the floor,” said San Marcos coach Tiffany Simms. “Very proud of the teamwork I saw on the court.”
Santa Barbara got a big game from sophomore Dayzia Mendoza, who recorded a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Chloe Adams and Jazz Gordon each scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds.
“It was an exciting, competitive game,” said Santa Barbara coach Andrew Butcher. “San Marcos jumped to an 8-0 lead after four quick steals and that ended up being the difference.
“I think San Marcos played tougher than we did,” he added. “They were able to get to more loose balls and also made several steals. We will try to improve on both of these in our next game on Saturday.”
The two teams meet again on Saturday at Santa Barbara.
San Marcos improves to 6-5 in league and 11-9 overall, while Santa Barbara is 1-9 and 2-18.
