The baseball scouts were out in force Tuesday to watch San Marcos ace Cole Schoenwetter pitch against Pacifica.
Schoenwetter didn’t disappoint, going 6.1 innings, striking out 11 while giving up two hits and two earned runs in a 6-5 Channel League win.
“I thought he was fantastic and stayed aggressive,” said San Marcos San Marcos coach Wes Ghan Gibson of his hard-throwing right-hander. “Those hitters are tough. They bear down with two strikes they make you throw strikes. I’m really proud of him. He puts in a lot of work to be good.”
The Royals improved to 8-1 in league play.
The San Marcos offense supported Schoenwetter, scoring three runs in the second inning. The Royals also capitalized on Pacifica errors.
Schoenwetter held down the fort, allowing no hits past his first inning of work.
“He’s the guy that we want up there, and I thought he was fantastic,” said Ghan Gibson.
San Marcos scored three runs with two outs in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Things were going well for the Royals until the seventh.
Schoenwetter ran into some trouble with two outs and runners on first and second.
Ghan Gibson brought in right-handed reliever Erik Perez.
The Tritons put together some hits and capitalized on an error to score four runs and cut the San Marcos lead to one. They almost tied the score, but Steven Bradley made a diving catch to end the game.
“We didn’t finish the way we wanted to,” said Ghan Gibson. “We allowed them to score and make the game close again. But I can’t be too picky in this situation. My boys play hard.
“To get a win like this when it wasn’t perfect at the end, is the most important thing. They were able to just find a way to finish. Sometimes it’s like that. Good win, good league win, proud of them.”
