San Marcos High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Alex Hoover as Head Baseball Coach for the Royals. Coach Hoover brings extensive experience at the collegiate and high school levels, with a track record of player development, academic achievement and competitive success.
Coach Hoover comes to San Marcos after serving as Head Baseball Coach at Menlo College from 2022 to 2025. His ties to the Central Coast and Santa Barbara baseball communities run deep, with previous roles as an assistant coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara City College and with the Santa Barbara Foresters.
During his time at Cal Poly, he contributed to a Big West Conference Championship and multiple NCAA regional appearances.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Hoover to the San Marcos family,” said Dr. Frann Wageneck, Athletic Director. “He understands that our student-athletes are students first. His record of building academic excellence alongside competitive success aligns directly with our mission to develop the whole person — in the classroom and on the field.”
Off the field, Coach Hoover is known for his commitment to the scholar-athlete model. At CSU Bakersfield, he implemented academic support initiatives that measurably improved team GPA.
He holds a Master’s degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs: Counseling and Guidance from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, reflecting his investment in the full development of student-athletes.
“I’m honored to be named Head Baseball Coach at San Marcos,” said Coach Hoover. “This program has a strong tradition and I look forward to building on its recent success. I want to thank Principal Dare Holdren for this opportunity. Go Royals!”
