San Marcos was within 10 points of top-ranked and Channel League-leading Oxnard in the third quarter on Wednesday before the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-0 run and ran away for a 78-48 boys basketball win.
Oxnard, ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 2AA, is 7-0 in league and 19-2 overall. San Marcos drops to 3-4 in league.
Andre McCullough led San Marcos in scoring with 12 points, Wyatt Miller had 8 and Ben Treadway added 7.
“Really proud of our effort tonight,” said Royals coach James Kinzler. “That’s obviously a very tough team over there, but our guys played really hard to the end. Andre was strong around the basket tonight, and I thought Wyatt and Ben gave us a good spark offensively.”
Kinzler said the Royals “ran out of gas a little bit there at the end of the third and they took advantage. That’s what good teams do.
“I thought this was much more of a game with these guys then the first time we played them at home, so I’m proud of our growth.”
The Royals are back in action on Friday night at home against Ventura.
