San Marcos softball struggled to keep up with Oxnard High in a 13-1 loss in six innings on Friday in Santa Barbara.
The Yellow Jackets plated three runs in the top of the first and never looked back, scoring in five of the six innings and dropping seven runs in the sixth to earn the mercy-rule win.
The lone run for the Royals came in the bottom of the first when Isa Malarkey came in to score on a wild pitch.
“We knew [Oxnard] was going to come out swinging and that they did,” San Marcos head coach Emily Dietz said. “We were able to answer back in the bottom of the first, but unfortunately couldn’t capitalize after that on any opportunities with runners on.
“Hats off to pitcher Lucy (Dessert) for battling through a tough lineup when they’ve seen her almost 10 times by the end of that game… They were able to get runners on and took advantage of some misplays and passed balls to push runs across.”
The Royals will host Pacifica for Senior Day on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., pending weather.
