San Marcos, Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos competed in the Channel League Swimming Finals on Thursday at Elings Aquatic Center.

The Royals came out on top in both the boys and girls meets while the Chargers’ boys earned a second-place finish and the girls slotted into third.

San Marcos

On the boys side, the Royals had several swimmers exceed in multiple events.

“I’m extremely proud of my boys this afternoon,” San Marcos coach Peere Sukavivatanachai said. “They showed resiliency and persevered through some challenging moments through the meet.

“Not only proud of my top swimmers this afternoon but the entire team overall showed growth and improvement. Today’s meet was a nice way to end the season for all our swimmers who hit personal best times for the year.”

Ben Caputo placed first in the 200 IM and second in the 100 backstroke while earning CIF consideration times in both of those events and the 100 freestyle.

Will Stuart was another swimmer to pick up a pair of CIF consideration times, finishing first in the 500 freestyle and touching the wall second in the 200 freestyle.

Rounding out the swimmers with multiple CIF consideration marks was Jacob Magid, who placed second in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

Nolan Clark’s second-place finish in the 100 fly got him a CIF consideration time while Will Robinson won the 50 freestyle on his way to a CIF consideration time. Clark was also third in the 200 freestyle.

A pair of Royals picked up CIF consideration marks in the 100 breaststroke as Franklin Jaramilla III and Pierce Rybnicek raced to the finish line together.

Both the 4×50 freestyle and the 4×100 freestyle relay squads took home CIF-worthy times. In the 4×50, Will Robinson, Magid, Caputo and Tanner Williams captured a CIF automatic time.

Meanwhile, Caputo, Clark, Magid and Robinson combined for a consideration mark.

“We came from behind to win 2 relays and I’m excited they found it within themselves to battle until the end,” Sukavivatanachai said. 

Girls

Leading the way for the San Marcos girls was the 200 medley relay team of Taylor Steelman, Sierra Tallman, Makena Stretz and Sophia Hall.

The Royals won that relay race by setting a new school record with a time of 1:45.99.

Steelman carried over that success to her individual races, winning the 500 freestyle (4:55.67) with the second-fastest time in school history.

She also came out on top in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.23.

The Royals will head to the CIF-SS Div. 2 Prelims on Wednesday at Mt. SAC.

Santa Barbara High

Nalani Yim led the Dons’ girls with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle and a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle. Both times were CIF automatic qualifying marks.

In the consolation finals, Stella Gray came out on top in the 100 fly and the 100 backstroke.

Rose Nelley (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Lulu Robana-Wayman (100 fly and 100 breaststroke) also earned consolation wins.

Boys

Calvin Nelley registered a third-place finish in the 100 fly while also coming in eighth place in the 200 IM on the boys side. Meanwhile, Shane Davis was third in the 100 breaststroke.

In the consolation races, Will Stearns-Corbin won the 100 backstroke and placed 10th in the 200 IM.

Also in the consolation finals, Jack Fulbeck earned a ninth-place mark in the 100 breaststroke.

Dos Pueblos

For the Charger boys, Grant Nelson earned a 100 butterfly league title with a time of 53.72 seconds and placed third in the 200 IM.

Andrew Kline-Fernandez also turned in a pair of strong showing with third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, qualifying for CIF in both.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Fuhrer was second in the 500 freestyle and finished up the 200 IM in seventh place.

Rounding out the CIF qualifiers was Liam Young, picking up fourth place in the 100 backstroke.

Girls

As for the girls, the Charger relay teams finished first and qualified for CIF Div. 1.

Individually, Dasha Dzreeva claimed the 200 IM league championship (2:13.52) and placed second in the 100 butterfly race.

Dzreeva’s fellow freshman Riley Moore came in second in the 100 backstroke with a CIF time of 59.70 seconds and collected seventh place in the 100 freestyle.

Megan Garner qualified for CIF in both the 50 freestyle (6th place) and the 100 backstroke (3rd place).

Other strong performers included Ava Shabestari (7th in 100 backstroke, 7th in 100 butterfly), Natalie Murray (5th in 500 freestyle, 7th in 200 freestyle) and Addison Parrish (4th in 200 freestyle, 6th in 100 freestyle).
