San Marcos hosted crosstown rivals Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos in a track & field meet on Wednesday at Warkentin Stadium.
The Royals showed out on their home turf, with the girls taking down the Dons 81-46 and the Chargers 89-38. On the boys’ side, San Marcos beat Santa Barbara 77-50 and bested Dos Pueblos 70-57.
The sweep gave the Royals the city championship.
“San Marcos had a great day today against our rivals,” Royals coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “We had a lot of great performances on both the girls’ and boys’ teams.”
Meanwhile, Santa Barbara High’s girls bested Dos Pueblos 70-57 and the Dons’ boys squad defeated the Chargers, 68-58.
“This is always a fun meet,” Santa Barbara High coach Olivia Perdices said. “Our kids all know each other and have grown up playing with and against each other in all sorts of things. It was a good day with three teams who score their points very differently making for some interesting matchups.”
San Marcos
Avery Leck had a huge performance on the girls side for the Royals, ending the day as a quadruple-winner. She placed first in the 100 meter (12.60), 100 hurdles (15.76), high jump (5-0) and long jump (17-6.5).
The only other multi-individual winner for San Marcos was Kiala Haas, who came out on top in the 800 meter (2:23.74) and the 1,600 meter (5:28.47).
“It was nice to see Kiala Haas have season bests for both the 1600 and the 800,” Hantgin said.
Rounding out the individual winners in the track events for the Royals were Ava Carter (200 meter, 26.5) and Sophia Rollman (300 hurdles, 51.73).
San Marcos swept the 100 hurdles and the 1,600-meter race as Rollman and Margaret Deakyne finished second and third in the 100 hurdles while Layla Llewellyn and Ellie Monson were second and third in the 1,600 meter.
The meet hosts also earned a win in the 4×100 meter relay race as the team of Carter, Nicolly Oh, Janelle Capuno and Lucia Wolf crossed the finish line in 50.16 seconds.
The final individual winner for the Royals was Ava Allen, who took home the win in the shot put with a distance of 31 feet, 3 inches.
For the boys, Ethan Ball was the lone double-winner for San Marcos with victories in the 110 hurdles (15.90) and the 300 hurdles (44.03).
The Royals also found success in the jumps, as the duo of TJ Deakyne and Henry Early shared first place in the high jump with a mark of 5-foot-10. Meanwhile, Tommy Fealy (41-9.5) led a San Marcos sweep in the triple jump.
Following up Fealy in the triple jump were TJ Deakyne (41-0.5) and Raul Robles (40-6).
“My coaching staff prepared our kids well for today’s competition,” Hantgin said. “Being city champs is an honor for our team.”
Santa Barbara High
The Dons had several individual winners on the boys side, with Malachi Johnston leading the way after earning first place in both the discus (133-0) and the shot put (44-2).
Andreas Dybdahl took a break from his normal, longer-distance events and competed in the 400-meter race, coming away with the win after finishing in 50.56 seconds.
Also earning first place in their respective events for Santa Barbara High were Magne Henriques (800 meter, 1:59.42) and Oleksa Tanasychuk (1,600 meter, 4:32.38).
The 1,600-meter race was a complete sweep for the Dons, as Tanasychuk finished just ahead of teammates Matthias Everest (4:32.64) and Benjamin Diaz (4:32.76).
The Dons’ 4×400 meter relay team registered the boys’ final first-place finish after Christopher Lopez, Blaise Snow, Henriques and Dybdahl clocked in at 3:32.67.
Santa Barbara High also won the girls edition of the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 4:17.81 by London Moro, Jasmyn Amirfazlian Denis, Adeline Hoke and Mackenna Show.
“Regardless of how scores play out, we take a lot of pride in showing up for the 4x4s,” Perdices said.
The lone girls individual to pick up a win in the track events was Moro, who finished the 400-meter race in 62.38 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Dons’ field event winners included Krystal Valdez (discus, 82-4), Sierra Gronquist (pole vault, 8-0) and Elina Stump (triple jump, 34-10).
Stump’s win led a Santa Barbara High sweep in the triple jump as Olivia Rockwood (29-7.25) and Marina Lopez (29-6) took second and third place, respectively.
Dos Pueblos
The Charger boys had a strong day and Gabriel Runyen was at the forefront of it, finishing in first place in both the 100 meter (11.35) and the 200 meter (23.13).
Eamon Gordon picked up the team’s other individual win in the track events, winning the 3,200-meter race with a time of 9:40.98.
Dos Pueblos’ boys 4×100 relay team won their race with a time of 43.5 seconds thanks to strong legs by Kaleb Williams, Noah Navarro, Cole Adair and Runyen.
“Gabe Runyen’s return to competition was action-packed,” Chargers coach David Jackson said. “His wins in the 100m and 200m were bookended by two great relay performances.”
The final two boys individual winners for the Chargers were Myles Shaddix (long jump, 21-2) and Leif Kylander (pole vault, 12-0).
“Myles Shaddix had a great approach to competition today,” Jackson said. “He’s great at turning his visualization into results, and today he knew he was in the zone before he set his PR.”
For the girls, the lone winner for Dos Pueblos was Sophie Saleh, who placed first in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 12:39.17.
