San Marcos swept the Crosstown Showdown Track & Field meet against rivals Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High on Wednesday at Scott O’Leary Stadium.

The Royals accumulated 71 points on the boys side to beat out the Dons (34) and the Chargers (30). Meanwhile, the San Marcos girls ended with 62 points to defeat Dos Pueblos (36) and Santa Barbara (29).

“It was a great day for all of our kids competing against other Santa Barbara friends from all over town,” San Marcos head coach Marilyn Hantgin said.

San Marcos

Logan Patterson Deakyne led the charge for the San Marcos boys as the team’s lone double individual winner. He won the 400-meter with a time of 50.78 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles at 42.17 seconds.

Meanwhile, Ethan Ball crossed the finish line first in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.91 seconds, leading a San Marcos sweep in the event. The Royals also swept the 100-meter dash with Brody Green coming in first place with a time of 11.48 seconds.

The San Marcos boys swept the relay races as well. In the 4×100 relay, Green, Cole Dominguez, Remi Boykin and Bryan Antov came out on top with a time of 44.9 seconds.

In the 4×400 relay, Patterson Deakyne was joined by Cole Heckman, Ashton Johnsen and Isaak Yanovich, who finished ahead of the pack in 3:36.68.

Avery Leck shined once again for the Royals girls with four individual victories, placing first in the 100-meter dash (12.49), the 100-meter hurdles (14.78), the 300-meter hurdles (44.41) and the high jump (5-5).

“This was a great day for Avery,” Hantgin said. “The conditions were not the best, being so windy, but that didn’t stop her from showing how impressive she is at her events.”

Meanwhile, Elsie Tuttle captured victories in the 800-meter and the 1,600-meter with times of 2:33.95 and 5:31.06, respectively.

Autumn Richardson won the 3,200-meter at 11:55.48 and Ava Allen placed first in the shotput with a mark of 31-7.7 to round out the individual winners.

San Marcos wrapped up its first-place finishers with the 4×400 relay team of Tuttle, Linden Yardley, Stori Satterfield and Jane Demmin, who finished in 4:24.89.

Santa Barbara High

The Santa Barbara High boys, who came in second, swept the long-distance events as Matthias Everest won the 1,600-meter at 4:28.16 and William Covington crossed the finish line in 9:56.48 to win the 3,200-meter.

“[Everest and Covington] understand racing and put themselves in great positions in some difficult conditions,” Dons head coach Olivia Perdices said.

Malachi Johnston flexed his muscles in the throws, finishing atop the pack in the shotput and the discus with distances of 49-8 and 153-4, respectively.

On the girls side, Elina Stump earned a pair of wins in the 200-meter (26.81) and the triple jump (35-3.75). Krystal Valdez came in first place in the discus with her throw of 89-5.

“Good day for [Stump] against some solid competition,” Perdices said.

Dos Pueblos

The Charger girls came in second, thanks in part to a 4×100 relay race victory by Hazel Burgess, Clehann Howard, Lucia Riley and Tabitha Weller, who finished in 51.08 seconds.

“They executed their handoffs smoothly, and Cle Howard brought us home our first win of the day,” Dos Pueblos head coach David Jackson said.

Howard also earned an individual victory after finishing first in the 400-meter race with her time of 1:04.59.

In the field, Harper Wolfe Lyons won the long jump at 16-11 and Julia VanDeVeire placed first in the pole vault with a mark of 9-6.

“With every meet, Harper continues to become a better long jumper,” Jackson said. “Julia is back in the swing of things at pole vault, and I’m proud of her for the win today.”

The Charger boys pulled in a pair of individual winners with Cullen Gully and Elliot McGuire winning their events.

Gully took firsts in the 800-meter with a time of 1:59.65 while McGuire won the triple jump with his mark of 48-5.

“[Gully] fed off the strong momentum from teammate Oliver Saleh at the bell lap, and when he made his move, there was no doubt he was all-out,” Jackson said.

“Elliot has been getting better and better as a Captain for the Chargers, leading his underclassmen at practice and setting the tone in meets.”
