San Marcos travelled to Oxnard Thursday and split wins, the boys and girls both beating host Rio Mesa and losing to Ventura.

“It was a very competitive day for the Royals,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “I am extremely proud of the kids. There were a lot of personal bests.

Highlights on the boys side included Ethan Ball winning both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles in times of 15.87 and 42.82, respectively.

Evan Perez won the 100 in 11.21 and was second in the 200 with 23.29, just barely behind teammate Dylan Briner, who won with the same time. Jonas Strand won the 400 meters with a time of 52.64.

For the girls, “Kate Edgar had a wonderful day,” Hantgin said. She won the long jump and triple jump, was second in the 100 hurdles and third in the shot put.

Clara Tracewell won both the shot put and the discus.

“This is very hard to do against a strong throwing team like Ventura,” Hantgin said.

Makenzie Fauver won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and was second in the long jump and third in the high jump.

Freshman Avery Leck tied to win the 100, jumped 5-0 in the high jump for second, and third in the 200.

“Avery had a breakout day for sure,” Hantgin said. “She has just started running because of an injury, but is now an important part of our successful girls team.

“ Ava Carter had a big job of trying to score in her events. She ran a very competitive  400 to get third, ran the 100 to get second and second in the 200. She was also the anchor of our winning 4 x 100 relay team along with Avery Leck, Natasha Bender, and Lucia Wolf.”

“It was a long day down in Oxnard, but our athletes competed and represented the Royals well,” Hantgin said.

Carpinteria

Carpinteria swept the boys and girls competitions against Citrus Coast League rival Malibu, 70-60 for the boys and 83-53 for the girls.

For the girls, Emily Ehlers won the 100 and 200, and Lela Roberts won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Averi Alexander won the long jump and triple jump, and Ainslee Alexander won the pole vault and shot put.

For the boys, Chris Ceja won the 400, and Wes Chung won the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Ivan Vargas won the long jump, Rooke Juarez the triple jump and Israel Samaguey won the discus.

“Carpinteria’s strength in the field events were able to offset the Sharks wins on the track,” Carpinteria coach Van Latham said.

The Rams girls are not 3-0 in the CCL and the boys 2-1.
