The San Marcos boys water polo team returns to their home pool on Tuesday for a first-round game in the CIF State Southern Regional Tournament. Game time is 5 p.m at San Marcos.

The CIF-Southern Section Division 2 champions face Classical Academy of Escondido, the San Diego Section Division 2 champion. The Caimans (21-5) upset top-seeded Patrick Henry, 7-5, in Saturday’s Division 2 title game at UC San Diego.

San Marcos (25-10) defeated crosstown rival Dos Pueblos, 9-6, for the Southern Section D2 title on Saturday at the EAC. It’s program’s first boys water polo title since 1994.

As a runner-up, Dos Pueblos received an invitation to play in the regional, but the Chargers declined the offer. Ventura, which lost to DP in the section semifinals, accepted the invite. The Cougars were seeded fourth and got a home game against Vista of the San Diego Section. Vista played in the Open Division and lost in the first round against Santana, 15-14.

The eight-team Division 2 regional includes teams from the Southern and San Diego sections. La Jolla, which lost in the Open Division semifinals is the No. 2 seed. The other teams in the regional are 32-0 El Segundo, the CIF-SS Division 3 champion, and San Diego teams Santana and Coronado.

The regional semifinals and finals will be played at the new aquatics facility at Mt. San Antonio College on Friday and Saturday.
