Freshman Sophie Yonker scored four goals, and the San Marcos girls water polo team tuned up for the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions by defeating host Buena, 6-4, in a Channel League game on Wednesday.
Former San Marcos and UC Irvine star Piper Smith guided the Royals on Wednesday. She serves as an assistant for head coach Chuckie Roth
“I’m glad we were able to have the opportunity to come out and put our best foot forward in tonight’s league game,” she said. “I’m excited to see the girls’ hard work pay off as the season continues
Roth was happy to see Smith get her first win as the head coach.
“Piper does an amazing job as a role model and I was so excited for her first win as a varsity coach,” he said.
Reese Danhauer and Jessica Prykhitko also scored for the Royals.
On defense, goalie Serenity Stanfield had ab impressive 19 blocks.
“Serenity is a class act kid. She was a field player two years ago when I asked her to consider going in the goal. She is a team player who just wants to help the team succeed. She is a special kid and deserves all the success she has,” said Roth.
San Marcos opens the Tournament of Champions on Friday at noon against Yucaipa at the Dos Pueblos pool.
