San Marcos Wrestling put together a strong showing at the Arroyo Tournament in El Monte on Saturday.
Despite not bringing a full squad, the Royals placed 13th out of 27 teams and just four teams had more finalists.
Dalton Shupe (138) and Cole Dominguez (144) led the charge, each finishing second in their respective weight classes.
“Dalton and Cole were unseeded coming into the tournament and beat out the #1 and #2 seed in their weight class, which is not an easy thing to do,” San Marcos coach Eric Flores said. “Both of these athletes have continued to improve their wrestling this season and it shows.”
Both wrestlers pulled off upsets in the semifinals, as Shupe knocked off the top seed in his bracket and Dominguez beat the No. 2 seed.
“These wrestlers are training partners in the wrestling room and both have great work ethic and push each other to their limits, which is an awesome thing to see,” Flores said. “It was great to see these young athletes in the finals.”
Angel Estrada (113) also secured a podium finish, placing third in his weight class.
At 132 pounds, Jacob Brown continued his solid season by ending his tournament in fifth place.
