The San Marcos boys tennis team clinched the Channel League title with a 13-5 win at home over Santa Barbara Thursday, finishing 10-0 in league play.

For Thursday’s match, Matthew Chung, who normally plays No. 1 doubles, was switched to No. singles — where he swept his three sets.

“Moving him to singles today was great, because he got to work on improving his forehand, which has been holding him back a little in doubles, but today he ripped through his forehands to sweep,” San Marcos coach Jonny Sapp said.

Chung’s usual doubles partner, Joey Friedman, also made the switch to singles, where he won against Santa Barbara’s No. 1 player.

The Chargers’ No. 3 doubles team Shea Suzuki and Giulio Rambelli also swept their sets.

“To end off the day, we had seniors Ethan Rivas and Noah Silverberg, who played in their last high school tennis league match ever, make a huge memorable last-set comeback win to close off the match,” Royals coach Jonny Sapp said. “They were down 2-5 and came all the way back and won 7-6 in the tie breaker to give us the 13-5 win today.”

San Marcos is 16-3 overall.

“We are currently projected to be seeded No. 1 in the Division 1 CIF Playoffs and will train hard the next couple weeks to gear up for it when it starts the first week of May,” Sapp said.
