San Marcos lost a pair of close games against Laguna Beach and Foothill at the Newport Harbor Invitational girls water polo tournament on Friday.

The CIF-SS Division 1 sixth-ranked Royals fell 13-11 against No. 2-ranked Laguna Beach and 11-10 against No. 6 Foothill.

Against Laguna Beach, Ava Stryker scored four goals, junior Madi Haaland-Ford had three and Mia Amberger tallied two goals. 

Goalie Elaia Hamilton stopped 12 Laguna Beach shots and made 11 saves against Foothill.

Stryker scored five goals and Amberger and Madi Sparre each had two against Foothill.

“Our team is playing very well against some of the best teams in the country,” said coach Chuckie Roth. “I’m very proud of the effort and our team growth.

San Marcos, which has a shot at fifth place, faces Carlsbad on Saturday morning.
