Jayla Provance of San Marcos earned medalist honors, but the balance and experience of Santa Barbara High’s girls golf team proved to be the difference in a 238-262 win at Sandpiper Golf Course on Monday.
Provance shot a 3-over par 39 to lead all scorers. Lizzie Goss of the Dons finished one stroke behind and Melia Haller was two strokes back.
“To have a freshman medal in such an important match was awesome,” said San Marcos coach Sarah Ashton. “Jayla had two birdies and some great pars to lead our team today. I am always impressed by her calm and focused demeanor.”
Ashton added that Riley O’Brien and Stella Ashamalla shot their best Sandpiper match scores in their last home match of the season and Fia Torrey shot a season PR.
“It’s so fun to watch these young players continue to improve. I was very impressed with their confidence on the course today against a very talented Santa Barbara team.
Santa Barbara coach Ryan Throop was happy how his players “hung in there on a course with speedy greens. The course was in good condition, and San Marcos is a very good team,” he said.
The Dons are 6-1 in league play and 9-1 overall.
