Santa Ynez freshman Mackenzie Phelan shot a 46 at a fogged-in Sandpiper Golf Course to take medallist honors, but San Marcos took team honors with a 264-269 edge over the Pirates.

Stella Ashamalla was low scorer for the Royals with a 49, and Evelina Erickson shot 50.

“We won a close one today,” San Marcos coach Sarah Ashton said. “We had bizarre weather conditions with dense, wet fog, making for some tricky play.

“It was great to see Evelina Erickson shoot another PR with a strong score of 50. Freshman Sadi Adams also played great today with a 53, her PR; she’s showing solid improvement this season and is having fun on the course. We were led today by Stella Ashamalla who has really found her groove and consistency recently; it’s fun watching her play and we rely on her low scores regularly.”

Santa Ynez coach Sara Ovadia also was happy with her team’s showing, and with freshman Phelan’s impressive score.

“I am proud of how the girls played today, as more than half the team had not seen the course before today and with the fog it was quite challenging,” Ovadia said.
