The consistency of San Marcos junior Leo Metzger carried him to a second straight Channel League individual golf championship on Tuesday at the Alisal Ranch Course in Solvang.
Metzger, who shared the first-round lead with a 72, shot a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday to win going away. His two-round total of 143 was seven shots ahead runner-up Teddy Vigna, a Dos Pueblos freshman who had a final-round 72 to finish at 150.
“Leo had a really solid couple of days on his way to his second straight championship,” said coach Jeff Ashton.
San Marcos freshman Graham Chapman, who was tied with Metzger after the first round, shot an 84 on Tuesday and finished at at 157. The score put him in the top seven to qualify for the CIF Northern Regional on Monday at Los Robles Greens in Thousand Oaks.
San Marcos took four of the seven spots. Sophomore Shams Jahangir-Arshad (78-74) finished tied for third with Santa Barbara High’s Thomas MacIntosh (77-75) at 152. Chapman was fifth (72-84—156) and Jeffrey Forster sixth (77-80—157).
“I was really proud of how all of our athletes played and I’m excited to have four of our athletes advancing to CIF Individuals,” said Ashton. “Shams and Jeffrey have been steady for us all year long and Graham has really worked hard to put things together at the right time.”
The final qualifier was Owen Hirth of Santa Ynez who tied with Ruben Mendoza of Dos Pueblos for seventh at 160 and won the CIF spot in a playoff. Hirth birdied the par-5 first hole to win the playoff. Mendoza will be an alternate.
