The San Marcos girls won their opener at the inaugural Newport Invitational Thursday, beating Mater Dei 12-10 in overtime.
Ava Stryker scored four goals and Mia Amberger three to lead the Royals. Goalie Elaia Hamilton had eleven blocks.
San Marcos, ranked in a tie for sixth in CIF-SS Division 1, is now 16-7 on the season. Vanquished opponent Mater Dei is ranked in a tie for third.
The end of regulation saw the teams knotted 9-9 before San Marcos prevailed 3-1 in overtime.
“I was proud of the way our team played tonight,” Royals coach Chuckie Roth said. “We played a very balanced offense and cohesive defensive effort. Our senior center defender Brooke Ingram had one one of the best games of her season.”
San Marcos continues play in the elite invitational at 8:30 Friday morning against Laguna Beach, ranked No. 2 in Division 1, and then at 2 p.m. against Foothill High School, tied with San Marcos at No. 6. Both games are at Newport Harbor High School.
The new invitational includes six of the top-seven ranked teams in CIF-SS Division 1, including the top-ranked host, Newport Harbor. The event also includes two teams from the San Diego CIF section.
