The pressure was on as the San Marcos and Dos Pueblos boys golf teams squared off in a  Channel League showdown on Monday at Glen Annie Golf Course.

Shams Jahangir-Arshad handled the pressure and fired a 1-under par 70 to earn medalist honors and teammate Leo Metzger shot even par to lead the Royals to a 380-390 victory that avenged their only defeat and pulled them even with Dos Pueblos atop the league standings with one loss.

“We knew that it was going to be tough to get a win at their home course, but all of our guys stepped up to the challenge and played some great golf in a pretty pressure-packed environment,” said San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton.

Jahangir-Arshad made four birdies, had one bogey and a double bogey on No. 17.

“He bounced back and made a great par on the last hole to finish under par,” said Ashton.

“I thought our team did really well in a highly anticipated match and we were able to get a hard-fought win,” said Jahangir-Arshad. “I was happy with how I played in such a big match.”

Jeffrey Forster shot a 1-over 72 and Brody Ricci and Holdt Gore scored 82 and 85, respectively, for the Royals

“We also got solid rounds out of our Brody and Holdt.  I think the experience they gained at the Champions’ Invitational in Indian Wells really came through today as they kept their composure through ups and downs,” said Ashton.

Ruben Mendoza led DP with a 76 while Michael and Andrew Gentry each carded a 77.

The match started on the back nine.

“Andrew Gentry had a great start to his round with a birdie on 10 and two more birdies on the front,” said DP coach Kevin Ahlers. “He is such a consistent player, and it was nice to see him score well today. Ruben Mendoza also played well with three birdies.”

The result leaves Dos Pueblos at 7-1 in league, 11-2 overall, and San Marcos at 5-1, 8-1.

“It was very nerve racking watching everyone play because the match could have gone either way,” said Ahlers. “The San Marcos team all played very well and they are a tough team to beat with play like today.”
