San Marcos freshman Makenna Stretz set a season best in winning the girls’ 100 meter breaststroke in a meet with Santa Barbara Thursday, and Asher Steelman was a double individual winner for the Royals boys.

Both San Marcos teams dominated Santa Barbara, with the girls winning 128-54 and the boys 127-42 in the Channel League meet.

Stretz won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.69. Holland Woodhouse won two individual races for the San Marcos girls, the 200 individual medley in 2:16.70 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.68. She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay.

Malia Yim won the 1-meter dive with a score of 389.65.

“She keeps improving and learning the sport,” San Marcos girls coach Chuckie Roth said. “We are excited about her end-of-the-year finish.”

Madi Sparre won the 200 and 500 freestyle for the Royals.

For the San Marcos boys, Steelman won the 200 IM in 2:04.01 and the 100 butterfly in 55.02.

The Royals won first and second in the 200 IM relay, and swept the 200 free relay.

“We have been training very hard for the past few weeks to get where we are, and the boys have shown a lot of resilience through it all,” Royals boys coach Peera Sukavivatanachai said. “Hopefully with a little rest over the next few days we should see some big improvements.”

Roth also sounded a positive note for the Royals girls.

“The girls are starting to find their niche and I think in the coming weeks we have the ability to be a whole new team. The girls are working really hard and have positioned themselves for some great end of the season results.”
