No. 1 singles player Natasha Gill set the tone for the undefeated San Marcos girls tennis team in a 17-1 rout of Dos Pueblos on Tuesday at the Royals’ courts.
Gill defeated Dos Pueblos No. 1 Ellie Triplett, 6-1, and followed with 6-1, 6-0 wins.
“She’s a senior this year and it’s been great having her on the team and always being reliable in all her matches,” said coach Jonny Sapp. “She’s playing strong and smart out there and improving her all-around game by being able to win her points from the baseline and at the net.”
Mina Yazadzhiev made her debut for San Marcos after transferring from Laguna Blanca and won her sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
“She had a wonderful debut as a Royal,” said Sapp.
Freshman Kate Selby took a set at singles.
“I heard DP had a strong singles lineup, so I wanted to give her a shot at their No. 1 to see how she would do and she did amazing,” said Sapp.
In doubles, the Royals’ top pair of Charlotte Manion and Sydney Posch led a 9-0 sweep in sets.
“All of our doubles teams today were playing at a high level, being aggressive at the net and playing smart and consistent from the baseline and working well as a team,” said Sapp.
The Chargers are 7-0 in league and 9-0 overall.
