Goalie Matthew Demboski stopped a penalty shot with two minutes to go, and San Marcos held on to beat Westlake, 8-6, in a CIF-SS Division 2 boys water polo quarterfinal game on Saturday at Westlake.

The Royals advance to a semifinal date with top-seeded San Clemente on Wednesday at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. Game time is scheduled at 2:30 p.m.

“Matthew Demboski had a stellar performance today,” said San Marcos coach Peera Sukavivatanachai. “A big penalty block late in the fourth quarter added to his 12-saves total. This was a big momentum stop for us, as we kept it scoreless for the rest of the game.”

Luke Burns scored three goals in the first half as the Royals built a 7-3 lead against the Warriors.

Saturday’s win was San Marcos’ third in four meetings with Westlake this season.
