San Marcos High opened its Channel League wrestling slate in style on Wednesday with a 66-15 rout of visiting Lompoc.
The Royals’ three captains all came through with Jose Lopez recording a fall pin at 113 pounds in under a minute; Esteban Flores winning by pin and Chris Esparza dominating the 170 class.
“At 138, Noah Duenas brought the house alive with a great slam that led to a pin,” said coach Daniel Sifuentez. “Derrick Ramirez at 160 (who has been battling illness all week and wasn’t sure if he would be able to make it today), he capped off the last match of the night with a dominating performance with a pin.
“Even though we were missing two of our varsity wrestlers, one at 132 and one at heavyweight, due to illness, we wrestled really hard tonight. We are ready for our journey to become league champs and finish what we started from last year. All in all, I am proud of my boys. This is a completely different team than last year, but we are very hungry for a league championship. We will be back to busines tomorrow, getting ready for our league match against Dos Pueblos next week.”
