Santa Barbara residents soon will pay more for trash and recycling pickup.

The City Council on Tuesday approved a rate increase for customers of MarBorg Industries.

The fees will rise by 3.4% for the typical ratepayer.

The cost is going up as a result of tipping fee increases, a new 10-year city contract with MarBorg and changes to billing administration.

Also this year, the city dropped a utility users tax that it had charged residents. City staff members said the 6.5% solid waste utility users tax was not in line with “best practices” of the industry.

The total fee increase would have been 9.9%, but since the city eliminated the UUT, the increase will be about 3.4% on average.

The new rates are set to take effect on July 1.

The rates for apartments with five units or more will see the largest increase, from about $536.40 to $618.20. For a single-family home, the increase will go from $57.70 to about $59.82.

City staff said it costs more to serve apartments than single-family homes because MarBorg might service apartments multiple times a week and houses once a week.

About seven people voiced a protest to the solid waste increases.
