Those electric bikes downtown and throughout Santa Barbara are here to stay.

The City Council on Tuesday extended the initial two-year pilot program for another three years. The vote was 7-0.

“This program has been more successful than I thought it would be,” Councilwoman Kristen Sneddon said. “I am really seeing this as a boost in our sustainability and that last mile traveled.”

Santa Barbara in 2021 partnered with private company BCycle to offer electric bikes. There are now 250 electric bikes docked throughout the city. The program has attracted about 36,000 riders who have traveled 951,000 miles.

Since the program launched, there have been five reported accidents. In addition, 16 bikes were stolen, according to the city. So far, three have not been found.

About 20 batteries have been stolen, and about 90 have been vandalized with graffiti or other damage.

City officials hope to continue to expand the program to close gaps in connectivity and develop a robust program that includes docks near neighborhoods.

Sam Furtner, the city’s mobility director, called the program a success.

“It’s affordable, and ultimately it’s a great option when it’s too far to walk,” Furtner said.

He also said the electric bikes are part of the new normal in Santa Barbara.

“As this program has evolved here in the city of Santa Barbara, we have come to look at bike share as an additional, active public transit option,” Furtner said.
