An inmate at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail died on Wednesday, an apparent suicide, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate, who had been housed in a single-person observation cell within the inmate reception center, was found unresponsive with a ligature around her neck at about 4:50 p.m., said Raquel Zick, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Custody officers, WellPath medical staff and paramedics attempted to revive the woman, who was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later, Zick said.

The deceased was Cecilia Michelle Covarrubias, 41, of Santa Ynez, Zick said Thursday.

Covarrubias was arrested in Buellton on Nov. 8 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for the safety of others, and driving under the influence of drugs.

She had been in custody in lieu of $75,000 bail.

“Investigators from Criminal Investigations, Coroner’s Bureau, and Administrative Investigations responded to conduct multiple investigations,” Zick said.

“The Coroner’s Office will conduct further investigation to determine the cause and manner of this death.”
