The Santa Barbara High and Carpinteria High boys water polo teams each kicked off the Buena Tournament with doubleheaders on Friday in Ventura.
The Dons and Warriors squared off in the first game of the weekend, with Santa Barbara High coming out on top, 8-7. Both sides followed up that matchup with losses to Long Beach Millikan.
In the first showdown, Carpinteria and Santa Barbara exchanged blows throughout the first half and the Warriors went into halftime holding a slim 4-3 lead.
Carpinteria High continued to hold the advantage throughout the second half, leading 7-5 in the fourth. However, the Dons came roaring back down the stretch and Paolo Borgioli scored the game-winning penalty goal to give SB the win.
Borgioli totaled five goals, three ejections earned and two steals in the win, while Jack Fulbeck, who drew the game-winning penalty, tallied two goals and two assists.
Meanwhile, Oscar De Leon, Junius Fedders, Chris Reed and Stefano Picoletti each had strong showings for Carpinteria High.
The Dons followed up that win with a 17-8 loss at the hands of Long Beach Millikan in which Borgioli recorded four goals and exclusions earned, and Mason Walsh had two goals and two exclusions earned.
Carpinteria High dropped its matchup with Long Beach Millikan by a score of 14-3, despite the Warriors combining for 10 field steals and three blocks.
Santa Barbara High will take on St. Francis and Foothill Tech on Saturday.
