Santa Barbara High track & field opened its season with an indoor competition at the California Winter Championships on Saturday.

“Those are great marks to start the year with,” Santa Barbara High head coach Olivia Perdices said. “We also got a nice read of where they stand with some of the best kids in California and where we can go as we move through the rest of the season’s training and competition phases.”

Elina Stump made school history with a program-best time of 8.87 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, securing a fifth-place finish in the event. She also placed ninth in the triple jump and 12th in the long jump.

Malachi Johnston also stood out with a ninth-place showing in the shot put (50-7.75) and a 14th-place performance in the weight throw (46-10.75).

Santa Barbara High will begin its outdoor season on Feb. 25 in a meet against Cate, Righetti and St. Bonaventure.
