Santa Barbara High track & field turned in a strong performance at the Malibu Invitational on Saturday in Malibu.

The Dons’ mixed 4×400 meter relay squad of Diego Placencia, Olivia Arevalo, Ethan Walp and Elina Stump established the program record with the time of 3:57.34.

“It’s an event high school kids don’t get to run much and the team was excited for the opportunity and took full advantage,” Santa Barbara High head coach Olivia Perdices said.

Stump continued her stellar day for the Dons with a first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles at 47.56 seconds and a third-place showing in the shot put after throwing a personal best 26-4.

“Solid all around day for [Stump]. That shot put mark will really help her heptathlon score later in the year,” Perdices said.

Meanwhile, Jarrod Shalhoob Conaway placed first in the triple jump at 39-0.5 and took second in the high jump with a mark of 5-10.

“[Conaway] is just coming off basketball season and finding a nice rhythm at track. He’s definitely got some bigger marks coming his way,” Perdices said.

Malachi Johnston (shot put, 53-6.75), Christopher Lopez (long jump) and Itzel Rayos Jimenez (1,600-meter) rounded out the individual standouts with second place showings.

The boys 4×200 meter relay squad of Lopez, Placencia, Angel Hernandez and Ethan Haas came in third after crossing the finish line in 1:35.86.

“A really good all around day for the team in every event group and some nice performances to build on through the season,” Perdices said.

Santa Barbara High will compete in the Don Green Invitational in Moorpark next weekend.
