Police arrested a Santa Barbara man Friday afternoon after an incident on the 800 block of Shoreline Drive when the man allegedly brandished an edged weapon at officers.
John Michael Moore, 34, was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail. The charges will be available at a later time, according to Lt. Ethan Ragsdale.
Ragsdale said officers were responding to a separate call at around 12:45 p.m. when a person “approached the officers, verbally threatened them and brandished an edged weapon.”
The man allegedly did not follow police commands and “fled” toward Leadbetter Beach, according to Ragsdale.
“The subject continued to flee onto the beach and into the ocean, still armed, and continued to refuse to follow commands to drop the weapon,” Ragsdale said. “Officers deployed less-lethal sponge munitions, causing the subject to drop the weapon and allowing officers to safely arrest him without further incident.”
A Santa Barbara co-response officer, Harbor Patrol and the Santa Barbara City Fire Department also responded to the incident.
The incident was under investigation, Ragsdale said.
Moore was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital before being booked into the jail, Ragsdale said.
Additional information was not immediately available.
